Nissan Murano Takes the Top Rating in Crash Safety Tests

The newly redesigned 2015 Nissan Murano SUV has been awarded the Top Safety Pick + rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety — and according to Edmunds, it was the best performer in the relatively new and more difficult small overlap front crash test. (1)
Nissan's all-new SUV earned a perfect score ("Good") in all five crash assessments, including the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints and seats, and the most difficult of all — the small overlap front test. As a result, the model has garnered the Institute's highest recognition for overall vehicle safety. (2) According to the IIHS, the new Murano "hit all the marks for ideal small overlap protection." In addition, the Institute says "the driver space help up well," and that the information retrieved from the dummy indicated a "low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity." (1) The small overlap front evaluation is a big deal. After all, approximately 25 percent of serious injuries and deaths resulting in front impact situations are small overlap collisions — when the front corner of your car comes into contact with another vehicle, or an object such as a telephone pole or a tree. (1) It's not easy to snag the top score in this department: the 2015 Dodge Journey
received a "poor" overall rating, and the 2015 Dodge Durango, Hyundai Santa Fe and Jeep Cherokee went home with only "marginal" overall ratings. (1)

(4) You'll also find adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and the automaker's Around View 360-degree camera and navigation system among the SUV's list of available technologies. (5)
Overall, the 2015 Nissan Murano is a vehicle to appreciate for its base price (the model is ranked one out of 12 Affordable Midsize SUVs by U.S. News & World Report) its comfortable interior and easy-to-manage features. The vehicle also offers a smooth ride and very good fuel economy for its class. (5) In terms of front crash prevention safety, it's been rated "Superior" when paired with optional equipment.
