Nissan Receives Top Nomination in IIHS Crash Test for Midsize SUVs

Nissan’s all-new 2015 Murano has received the Insurance Institution for Highway Safety’s highest award, the Top Safety Pick Plus, after having aced all of the organization’s evaluations, including the more difficult small-overlap front crash test. (1)

The Japanese automaker's versatile five-passenger mid-size crossover was awarded the top Good score in all crash tests from the IIHS, including the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, as well as head restraints and seats assessment. (2) In addition, Edmunds says the Institute put seven popular SUVs and crossovers through its most difficult evaluation, the small-overlap front crash test, of which the new Murano came out on top. Edmunds, in citing the IIHS, says that Nissan’s newly-redesigned model “hit all the marks for ideal small overlap protection,” and that measures taken from the dummy “indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.” (1)
The test was introduced in 2012, since approximately 25 percent of all serious injuries and fatalities occurring in front impacts result from small-overlap collisions (3) — which is when the front corner of a car comes into contact with another car or object. (2)
Other SUVs and crossovers that were tested include the 2015 Ford Flex, Dodge Journey and Durango, Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee, and the Hyundai Santa Fe. (1)

The head-turning, dramatically-styled 2015 Nissan Murano comes equipped with electronic stability control, hill start assist and anti-lock brakes. Forward emergency braking and collision warning systems are available with the Technology Package, among a host of other intriguing active-safety features. (4)

Test drives are available at Ferman Nissan of Tampa Bay. (2)
