A Sneak Peek into the 2016 Nissan Titan XD

Cars.com Pickup Truck Editor Mark Williams managed to get inside the all-new 2016 Titan XD during this year’s Detroit Auto Show, and after some time with the beast, concluded that Nissan’s refreshed model will “shake things up in the half-ton pickup truck world.” (1)
Introduced as a 2004 model, Nissan’s pickup offered what many buyers wanted from a full-size truck in terms of dimensions and capabilities. The truck featured a fully boxed frame for maximum rigidity and a classic solid rear axle with leaf-spring support, according to Edmunds.com. (2)

What’s New?

For 2016, the Nissan Titan has been fully redesigned, with the XD sporting new looks, a beefier suspension, heavy-duty brakes, a stability-enhancing integrated gooseneck hitch built into the frame and a tougher transfer case for maximum power distribution — allowing torque to reach both axles — and provide four-wheel drive for added traction. (3) The new model now uses a stronger, high-strength steel boxed frame (4) and sports a bigger and tougher American Axle-manufactured axle and differential to meet towing, tugging, winching and pulling needs, according to the automaker. Inside the Truck

After spending some time inside Nissan’s next-generation heavy-duty XD, Williams described the truck’s interior improvements as light years ahead of what it was before and said the center console is much more modern-looking. (1) This is perhaps due in part to the new standard column-mounted transmission shifter lever that requires thumb-activated tap-up/tap-down operation. It replaces the console shifter used in previous models (5) and provides additional room for the center console as a
result. (1)

Under the Hood

As for power and performance, the 2016 Nissan Titan XD comes equipped with a powerful 5.0-liter (Turbo Diesel) V-8 Cummins rated at 310 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque. The engine is much stronger than Ram’s Eco-Diesel and is paired to a heavy-duty six-speed Aisin transmission. (5) PickupTrucks.com says the vehicle can deliver a maximum towing capacity of more than 12,000 pounds when properly equipped, which means that Nissan’s new XD is actually stronger than other half-ton models. (5)

According to Williams, the company is attempting to hit the sweet spot between light-duty and “half-ton and heavy-duty big powerful diesels" with its all-new 2016 Titan XD. (1)
Overall, however, the Cars.com Pickup Truck editor concluded that Nissan’s next-gen model — which will go head-to-head with some “vicious” rivals — looks like it will be a great off-roader. (1) For more details regarding the automaker’s beast, contact Ferman Nissan of Tampa Bay. (2)
